September Awareness: Suicide Prevention & Mental Health Equity

September is Suicide Prevention Awareness Month — an essential moment to uplift mental wellness, strengthen community resilience, and confront rising suicide trends among Black youth and adults. At Village of Healing, we believe healing begins with understanding, support, and culturally sensitive care. This month, let’s stand together to recognize the signs, reduce stigma, and connect with resources that preserve hope.

Understanding the Data

Fact #1: From 2018 to 2021, suicide rates among Black youth ages 10–24 years increased from 8.2% to 11.2%

Fact #2: In 2022, suicide was the third leading cause of death for Black or African Americans ages 10 to 24

Fact #3: The overall suicide rate for Black or African Americans was 50% lower than that of the non-Hispanic white population, in 2021

What’s Driving the Crisis

Socioeconomic stressors like poverty, food insecurity, housing instability, and educational inequity increase emotional strain

Cultural stigma around mental health and suicide often prevents Black individuals from discussing emotional distress or seeking support. Fear of judgment or being seen as weak can isolate those needing help most

Limited access to culturally competent therapists and mistrust of healthcare systems further deepen the divide.

Village of Healing offers holistic, culturally centered mental health support to help meet the needs of our community.
