Protect Yourself. Protect Your Family. Protect Your Health.
Summer is a time for fresh fruits, vegetables, backyard cookouts, and family gatherings. Unfortunately, it is also the time of year when Cyclospora infections increase across the United States.
Health officials, including the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), are currently investigating a multistate outbreak and expect cases to continue through August. At The Village of Healing Center, we believe that prevention is one of the most powerful forms of healthcare.
By understanding the risks and knowing what symptoms to watch for, you can help protect yourself and those you love.
What is Cyclospora?
Cyclospora is a parasitic infection caused by the single-celled protozoan Cyclospora cayetanensis.
This microscopic parasite is typically spread through food or water contaminated with feces.
In the United States, infections are most often linked to fresh produce such as leafy greens, herbs, berries, and other fruits and vegetables.
Cyclospora infections are most common during the warmer months—from May through August—when fresh produce is abundant and outdoor dining increases.
Why Is There an Outbreak Right Now?
The CDC is currently investigating a multistate Cyclospora outbreak affecting thousands of people across the country.
While investigators continue working to identify the exact food source, health officials expect cases to continue rising throughout the summer.
Unlike many stomach illnesses, Cyclospora can be difficult to trace because symptoms often don’t appear until about one week after exposure, and they may return even after seeming to improve.
Symptoms to Watch For
Symptoms usually begin about one week after eating contaminated food or drinking contaminated water, although they can appear anywhere from 2 days to more than 2 weeks later.
- Common symptoms include:
- Frequent watery diarrhea
- Severe or explosive diarrhea
- Stomach cramps
- Bloating
- Gas
- Nausea
- Loss of appetite
- Weight loss
- Fatigue
- Low-grade fever
- Headache
- Muscle aches
- Vomiting (less common)
Without treatment, symptoms may last weeks or even longer, sometimes improving before returning again.
- Who Is Most at Risk?
- Anyone can become infected, but complications can be more serious for:
- Young children
- Older adults
- Pregnant women
- People with weakened immune systems
- Individuals with chronic medical conditions
One of the greatest risks is dehydration, especially during the hot summer months when high temperatures already increase fluid loss.
How Can You Protect Yourself?
Although no prevention method is perfect, the CDC recommends several important steps:
Wash your hands.
Always wash your hands with soap and water before preparing food and before eating.
Wash fresh produce thoroughly.
Rinse fruits and vegetables under running water before eating, cutting, or cooking.
Refrigerate cut produce promptly.
Keep prepared fruits and vegetables cold.
Cook when possible.
Cooking kills the parasite more effectively than washing alone.
Drink safe water.
Avoid drinking water that may be contaminated.
Stay hydrated.
If you develop diarrhea, replace lost fluids immediately.
When Should You See a Healthcare Provider?
- Don’t ignore persistent stomach symptoms.
- Seek medical care if you experience:
- Diarrhea lasting more than two days
- Bloody stool
- Severe abdominal pain
- High fever
- Signs of dehydration (dizziness, dry mouth, decreased urination)
- Fatigue that interferes with daily life
Because Cyclospora is not detected on every routine stool test, your healthcare provider may need to order specific testing if Cyclospora is suspected.
