Prostate Cancer Awareness: Why It Matters for Black Men & Health Equity

September is Prostate Cancer Awareness Month. It’s a time to shine a light on a disease that affects Black men at disproportionately higher rates. With early screening and culturally competent care, outcomes improve. Here’s what you need to know.

Understanding the Disparities

Fact #1: Black men are nearly twice as likely to develop and die from prostate cancer compared to White men

Fact #2: One in six Black men will be diagnosed in their lifetime, compared to one in eight men overall

Fact #3: Men with early-stage disease have a greater than 99% 5-year survival rate

Taking Action

Early screening, starting between ages 40–45, especially for Black men, is now recommended by experts. Accessible support from Black providers and health educators can dramatically improve trust, follow-up care, and outcomes.

Village of Healing offers culturally specific health services to help close this gap.
